Louisville is coming off a physical, emotional opener against Ole Miss and has just five days to turn around and play again.
There isn’t much mystery about the assignment Friday night.
Here are 10 things to know, watch and expect before kickoff.
1. Story of the Game: Get In, Get Right, Get Out
Establish dominance early and lean on the run game.
This doesn’t need to become complicated. Louisville should have the advantage up front. Spread the work around among the backs, keep everybody fresh, control the game and create separation early.
More than anything, get out healthy.
Friday is the bridge between the season opener and a monumental Week 3 clash with SMU.
2. Know the Opponent: This Isn’t Just Another FCS Team
Villanova went 12-3 last season and reached the FCS semifinals.
The Wildcats started 1-2 before ripping off 11 straight wins, including three playoff victories, before Illinois State ended their season one game short of the national championship game.
There hasn’t been a coaching overhaul, either. Mark Ferrante remains in charge, while the biggest change is conference affiliation. Villanova moved into the Patriot League this season and was picked to win it.
The start has been uneven: a 35-32 loss to William & Mary followed by a 17-16 win at Bucknell.
This is a team Louisville should beat comfortably, but it isn’t a program accustomed to rolling over.
3. By the Numbers: 8,038
That’s how many career passing yards Villanova quarterback Pat McQuaide has accumulated.
He has attempted more than 1,100 college passes and enters Friday with a massive amount of experience behind him.
McQuaide is a formidable veteran quarterback who has seen plenty of football. Louisville should expect him to come in composed and make the defense earn its stops.
4. Watch This Early: The Operation
Forget the scoreboard for a minute.
Watch the clock.
How quickly is the play getting in? How much time does Lincoln Kienholz have from receiving the call, to breaking the huddle, to getting the offense lined up and ready to snap it?
There were too many moments against Ole Miss where the entire operation felt rushed.
Friday gives Louisville a perfect opportunity to show that part of the offense has already tightened up.
5. Deciding Matchup: Louisville’s Run Game vs. Villanova’s Front Seven
If Louisville wants to make this a straightforward night, this is where it starts.
Villanova has defended the run well through two games, allowing just 190 yards on 71 attempts — 2.7 yards per carry — and only one rushing touchdown.
That’s impressive.
It’s also been against William & Mary and Bucknell.
Now comes a much different test.
Louisville should own a significant physical advantage up front. If Brown and the Cardinals are ripping off six and seven yards at a time early, Louisville can dictate everything that follows.
6. Their Guy: Omari Bursey
Villanova sophomore linebacker Omari Bursey has 29 tackles through two games, including 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
He opened with 15 tackles against William & Mary and followed it with 14 more at Bucknell.
And he happens to sit directly in the middle of the matchup Louisville should want to attack.
If Louisville is going to impose its will on the ground, Bursey is going to have a busy night trying to prevent it.
7. 502 MVP: Brody Foley
Week 1 was quiet.
One catch. Three yards.
This is the week I think Louisville gives everybody a glimpse of why there was so much excitement about Foley coming out of the portal.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound tight end led Tulsa with 528 receiving yards on 37 catches last season and scored nine total touchdowns.
I think Brohm gets him involved early and we finally see that size become a real part of the passing game.

8. Did You Know?
Villanova started last season 1-2 and had just surrendered 50-plus points in back-to-back games when Ja’briel Mace returned the opening kickoff of the second half against William & Mary 100 yards for a touchdown.
Villanova won that game and didn’t lose again for nearly three months, ripping off 11 straight victories on the way to the FCS semifinals.
One play helped flip an entire season.
9. 502 Bold Call: Marquise Davis Forces His Way Into the Conversation
Isaac Brown. Keyjuan Brown.
And then there’s Marquise Davis.
The former Missouri back arrived at Louisville as a four-star, top-200 high school prospect, with On3 ranking him as high as the No. 5 running back in the 2025 class. Now he’s sitting third in a Louisville backfield that may be the deepest position group on the roster.
My bold call is that Davis gets plenty of second-half work Friday and makes it hard not to notice him.
Maybe it doesn’t immediately change the pecking order. But I think we leave the stadium feeling even better about what Louisville has behind its top two backs.
The stable is full.
10. 502 Score Prediction
LOUISVILLE 45, VILLANOVA 14
Run the football. Spread the carries around. Get the operation cleaned up. Get Foley involved. Build a comfortable lead and let the depth chart go to work.
Most importantly, come out healthy.
