Wake Forest hurt. There’s no getting around that one. Now Louisville heads to Raleigh battered, frustrated and facing its first true road environment of the season. This feels less like just another game on the schedule and more like a fork in the road. The season is still sitting there for the taking, but first Louisville has to respond.
1. Story of the Game — The Crossroads
Backs against the wall. Injuries piling up. Still licking the wounds from last week. Now what?
This feels like a crossroads game for Louisville. Does this team respond, take control of the next stretch of the season and start moving forward again? Or does one disappointing loss become something bigger? There may be no better place to find out than a hostile road environment.
Forget style points. Play clean football. Handle the noise. Take care of the little things. Get out of your own way. How Louisville responds tells us a lot about where this season goes from here.
2. Know the Opponent — Carter-Finley Is the Real Deal
NC State has now sold out 30 straight home games, and that deserves some respect.
The Wolfpack haven’t exactly spent the last decade stacking conference championships or playoff appearances, but their fans continue to show up, fill the stadium and create an atmosphere that feels like big-time college football. There’s something Louisville can aspire to in that.
Carter-Finley is going to be loud, and it’s going to feel different from anything Louisville has experienced this season.
3. By the Numbers — 219
NC State is averaging 219 rushing yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry. That gets my attention.
The Wolfpack want to stay ahead of the chains, and the interior run game is going to put Louisville’s defensive front to work. We’ve seen the inside draw cause problems before, and this is a week where the tackles and linebackers have to close those lanes before they develop.
CJ Bailey also gives NC State some mobility at quarterback, although Louisville has already gotten plenty of practice dealing with quarterbacks who can move. Hopefully, that experience finally pays off.
219 yards per game is a lot. Make NC State earn them somewhere else.
4. Watch This Early — Can We Play One Clean Quarter?
That’s it. Give me 15 minutes of clean football.
No pre-snap mistakes. No unnecessary penalties. No busted assignments. No losing your composure because of a whistle you don’t like. Good call, bad call, move on.
Especially in Louisville’s first true road game, composure matters. Whether Lincoln Kienholz is under center or Louisville has to turn to the backup, this offense cannot spend another opening quarter fighting itself.
Forget looking for perfection. Can Louisville simply get through the first quarter without shooting itself in the foot? That would be a pretty good start.
5. Deciding Matchup — Louisville’s Run Game vs. NC State’s Front
Seventy-five rushing yards against Wake Forest isn’t going to cut it. Period.
NC State has a solid run defense, which makes this another measuring stick for an offensive line that is still trying to find consistency. With Anwar more settled, this group has to start moving bodies.
Louisville’s backs are good enough to create yards on their own, but they shouldn’t have to manufacture everything. Give them a crease. Get them downhill. Let them reach the second level before somebody is already hanging off them.
We saw what this offense can become when the line took control against SMU. Now prove that wasn’t a one-week thing.
6. Their Guy — Keenan Jackson
Keep an eye on No. 8.
Keenan Jackson leads NC State with 295 receiving yards through four games and gives CJ Bailey a legitimate weapon on the outside. That matters because Louisville has been susceptible to the big pass.
One missed assignment, one late safety or one corner losing leverage can suddenly turn an otherwise solid defensive series into six points. We’ve already watched opposing receivers put together some pretty healthy box scores this season.
No need to let Jackson join the parade. Know where he is and make NC State find another way to create explosives.
7. 502 MVP — Tre Richardson
I’m going back to Tre Richardson.
I thought last week was going to be his breakout. It wasn’t. But every time the ball gets in his hands, he still looks dangerous, so let’s be intentional about it.
Give him the outside run. Get him something underneath. Manufacture a touch or two instead of waiting for the game to naturally find him. And maybe, just maybe, we can retire the end-zone fade for an afternoon.
Richardson is too shifty and too explosive to disappear for long stretches. Especially if McCoy isn’t at full strength, Louisville needs to make getting Tre involved part of the plan rather than something that happens by accident.
502 MVP Prediction: Tre Richardson — 7+ touches, 100+ total yards.
8. Did You Know? — Louisville Owns the Series
Louisville leads the all-time series against NC State 9-4 and has won the last two meetings. The last trip to Raleigh came in 2023, when Louisville escaped Carter-Finley with a 13-10 win.
This series has rarely been pretty. It has usually been physical, frustrating and tight well into the second half.
So if Saturday starts looking like another rock fight, nobody should be surprised. Louisville has been here before — and lately, the Cards have found a way.
9. 502 Bold Call — Five or Fewer
I tried this one last week, and I’m putting it back into the universe.
Five penalties or fewer.
Louisville has to start playing cleaner football. You’re not going to eliminate every flag. Some will be questionable. Some will come from playing aggressively. But the procedural mistakes, late hits, unnecessary stuff and completely avoidable penalties have to disappear.
Especially on the road, good teams don’t continually give away free yards and then wonder why every fourth quarter feels stressful.
502 Bold Call: Louisville finishes with five penalties or fewer.
10. 502 Score Prediction — Louisville 31, NC State 24
This feels like another NC State game: physical, back and forth, probably irritating at times.
I don’t expect Louisville to walk into Raleigh and run away with it early. NC State will have stretches where the run game works, the crowd gets loud and Louisville has to weather it. But I think the Cards respond.
The run game gets back on track. Richardson makes a couple of plays. The defense gets enough stops. And Louisville finally puts together the cleaner performance we’ve been waiting to see.
Louisville 31, NC State 24. Get right. Get the road win. Send the Pack home with another L.
